Bird Migration Is Underway—Here’s How You Can Help Protect Birds
Bird migration is beginning, and as thousands of birds travel through our region, the buildings and lights we use every day can make a meaningful difference.
Bird Safe Indy is working to prevent bird deaths and save energy by promoting bird-safe buildings and reducing unnecessary nighttime lighting. Building owners, managers, tenants, and businesses can all play a role in creating a safer environment for migrating birds.
Simple actions can make an impact, including:
- Turning off unnecessary exterior and interior lights
- Closing blinds when leaving work for the day
- Using timers or motion sensors to reduce overnight lighting
- Incorporating bird-friendly window treatments and other building solutions
- Encouraging your building or workplace to participate in Bird Safe Indy’s efforts
By making a few simple changes, we can help reduce hazards for migrating birds while also cutting down on unnecessary energy use.
