AES Seeking Rate Increase in 2026
AES Indiana Rate Increase Proposal – What You Need to Know & How to Comment
Based on recent reports and AES Indiana's filings with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC), AES is seeking a rate increase that would impact customers in 2026 and beyond. It’s important to note that the proposal is currently under review by the IURC, with a final decision to be made by the spring of 2026.
There are several public comment dates coming up in August. If you are compelled, please voice your concern over this potential rate hike either via the public comment meetings or in writing (instructions below). We are hopeful the IURC will not approve a hike of this magnitude. Duke Energy asked for a 28% rate increase and only received 14%.
Breakdown of the Proposed Rate Changes
-
Two-Phase Increase: AES Indiana is proposing a rate hike that would be implemented in two phases:
-
Phase 1: An estimated 7.5% increase in the second quarter of 2026.
-
Phase 2: An estimated 6% increase in January 2027.
-
-
Additional Increases: On top of this, customers are expected to see an extra 6% bill increase in 2026 due to previously approved projects (such as the Pike County Battery Energy Storage System, Petersburg Energy Center, and grid improvements).
-
Combined Effect: When combining the proposed rate hike with the previously approved increases, customers could potentially face a total increase closer to 20% by the end of 2026.
